Long Overdue Holiday

Back at the end of April I took a holiday. For two reasons mainly-

1. It had been over a year since my last holiday and...
2. ...the Royal Wedding was on.

The latter earned us Brit's an extra bank holiday (public holiday to the rest of the world) which when combined with Good Friday, Easter Monday and May Day, equaled eleven paid days off for the price of three. Bit of a no brainer really. Go on holiday.

So where did I go?

The west coast of the US of A. I landed and was immediately shocked by the friendliness of the passport control officer. Observe:

New York JFK, 2009
And now compare:

Los Angeles LAX, 2011
Anyways, after that I was greeted by KP, who (along with the family) played host for the week I spent in LA. Kris is, without a doubt, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Him and his family showed me the sights of LA, took me to a couple of hockey games and even managed to fit in a desert trip to Red Rock Canyon!

Now as fun as my holiday snaps are, I'm guessing most people are probably here to see some drawing...so it's a good job we went out sketching too...

Venice Beach: Skaters and bums...
Santa Monica Beach: Boobs and bums...
Disneyland: No bums...lots of kids though.
Inside the Getty: Gustav Klimt bums...
Outside the Getty: Sculptured bums...

After touring around LA for a week I hit the Pacific Coast Highway and headed north toward the Bay Area!

Next post: The PCH and San Francisco.

  1. Awesome post :)
Your observational stuff is great - especially the skateboarders (and I like how it's all presented as a little project!)
Was that a regular season game? Looks pretty empty :/
    Glad you had fun!

  2. Now THAT is a blog post ! Best batch of sketches I've seem u do - that's a ready made portfolio right there buddy ! Great to see the photos from your trip too . The airport strips are hilarious !

  3. Amazing! I love the efficiency of your drawings. The photos, especially of the desert, are beautiful and the comic is super cool.
I hope I can get out there for a holiday some time, looks like you had a lot of fun!

  4. L - It was Game 7 of a Stanley Cup Play off! It looks empty because it's just the teams warming up...everyone was still getting hotdogs and beer.

Matt - Still need to combine the people and the scenes though...get some STORY into more of them.

    Geoff - Vorsprung durch technique

  5. Good memories mon comrade! Fantastic drawings... those were some profitable days hanging around Venice and such! Since you've been gone, I have had no car trouble. If only I could say the same about Baseball... errrf!
Hope to see you again soon.
    Best wishes,

  6. Awesome sketches. I hope these were accompanied with a beer.

  7. KP - Not only did I get drawings...I also got suburn!..and I'd almost forgotten about that other incident.

Paul - A beer? Try putting an 's' on the end of the word beer.

  8. Ha Ha!! Love your stories!! :D
Really love the family with the push chair all wearing mickey ears!!
Loving the Asian guy with the guitar and the skaters too!!
Also love the series of sketches of the wee boy playing in the sand....
Actually i'm loving them all!! Like Matt said, you got yourself a great portfolio right there just out of your American adventure!!
    Keep um coming!!
Thanks again for having me the other week! Was great to see you!
    All the best,

PS... Still no spiffing book :(
